Mt. SAC Paces Themselves to First Round Shutout
over San Jose City.
May 18 , 2007
Chino Hills, Calif. – San Jose City had a lot to overcome facing the first seed
from the south, powerhouse Mt. SAC. The Mounties were on a fifteen game win streak
and proved that they were set to extend it with a 6-0 shutout win over San Jose
City. Sophomore third baseman Ursula Lopez led the Mounties offense with three RBI
on the day going 2 for 2 from the plate.
Mt. SAC started at a sprint with a single from sophomore first baseman Danielle
Linke and then a double down the left field line from freshman shortstop Francesca
Gonzales. Lopez made it three hits in a row with a single through the right side
for two RBI scoring Linke and Gonzales. The Mounties added another in the third
with a lead-off double from freshman outfielder Randie Baldwin. Baldwin hit second
from a sacrifice bunt and then came home from an RBI single from Lopez.
The Mounties piled some more on in the fifth with a lead off triple from Baldwin
to left and then a sacrifice fly from Linke to score Baldwin. Gonzales and Lopez
walked and freshman pitcher Mandy Pongs singled to score pinch runner Amanda Mickey.
Lopez scored next on a wild pitch for the sixth and final run.
The San Jose City offense could not get going against Pongs going down in order
in four innings and only able to generate four base runners. The Jaguars had their
best chance in the bottom of the seventh when freshman pitcher Deborah Duran singled
to short, reached second off a walk from Jacklyn Alvarado and then third on a fielder’s
choice. Duran would be stranded there, as The Jaguars could not bring her home.
Pongs earned the win for Mt. SAC improving to 21-2 pitching the complete game shut
out and striking out seven batters allowing just three hits. Duran suffered the
loss falling to 17-4.
San Jose City suffered the loss falling to 42-7 on the season. They move to the
loser’s bracket facing Siskiyous in a do-or-die situation. The Jaguars have lost
to Siskiyous once this season 0-1 and will meet up again tomorrow at 2:00 pm Saturday.
Mt. SAC improves to 50-4 and moves on to the second round to face Antelope Valley.
The Mounties are 2-1 against the Marauders this season and will meet up again at
7:00 pm tonight on Field 1.
