Cypress Avenges Early Season Loss to Sierra in State Championships
May 18 , 2007

Chino Hills, Calif. – Sierra and Cypress faced off in a rematch to open the 2007 State Championships. Sierra defeated Cypress 3-1 earlier this season but Cypress had the last word this time around with a 5-0 win. Cypress out-hit the Wolverines 11-3 in the shutout with Charger freshman Ashley Boyd leading the way going 4 for 4.

Sierra had a promising start as sophomore catcher Ashley Edgar led the game off with a single. Freshman pitcher Sydney Rae Woolley would strand a runner on second after a fielder’s choice and two groundouts ending the Wolverines threat. The Cypress offense took over from there. Boyd led the offense off with a single to center and then stole second. An out later, sophomore catcher Gabrielle Woody followed with an RBI single through the middle to bring home Boyd for the first run of the game. Woody hit second next on a wild pitch and sophomore left fielder Sabrina Hernandez switched places with her for Cypress’s second run.

Cypress added a run in the second. Freshman third baseman Lizette Mejia reached on a walk and then second on a ground out. Boyd hit one to short and beat out the throw to reach first as Mejia raced home. The Cypress defense held up while Cypress kept hitting. Boyd produced her third single of the game to right and then stole her second base of the day to reach second. Sophomore designated player Brooke Pefley took a full count pitch to center for an RBI single for the fourth run. The Chargers finished it off in the sixth with their fifth and final run. Mejia singled up the middle and was replaced by freshman pinch runner Caitlin McGrath who immediately stole second and then reached third on a sacrifice bunt. Freshman second baseman Christina Gonzales hit a sacrifice fly to left as McGrath tagged up to score Cypress’s final run.

Woolley earned the win improving to 16-0 on the season allowing just three hits. Sierra all-State pitcher Nicole Kociemba suffered the loss pitching two innings and allowing four hits and three runs falling to 22-6. Freshman Leticia Cisneros finished up for Sierra pitching the next four innings allowing 7 hits and two runs.

Sierra falls to 42-9 on the season and moves to the loser’s bracket to face fellow North team, first seed Sacramento City at noon Saturday on Field One. Sierra is 0-3 against the Panthers so far this season. Cypress improves to 51-4 and moves on to the second round to face Southern California rivals, fourth seed Cerritos. Cerritos defeated Cypress 2-0 a month and a half ago. The two will face off again at 5:00 pm today on Field One.
